north shore medical clinic
berners schober inc.
The orthopedic wing addition to the North Shore Medical Clinic draws inspiration from the magnificent geography of its Door County location. Adopting many sustainable, natural materials, the interior finishes include durable porcelain tile, environmentally-friendly linoleum and a medley of earthy tones mirroring the natural stone variations of the area. Both distinct from and unified with the main building, the orthopedic wing provides a welcoming atmosphere and pleasant location to heal.

Creative reflection of Door County’s ecological and artistic features.

A welcoming, open entrance and comforting waiting area give way to daylit clinical rooms for an overall better patient and staff experience.

The facility’s location in Door County, a narrow peninsula holding back Lake Michigan waters, means it is never more than 10 miles from the shoreline. The fertile land, bountiful cherry and apple orchards and well-regarded vineyards, provide the perfect canvas for architecture. The area’s unique coastal feel is mirrored in the texture-rich, neutral color palette and integration of both abstract and realistic works of art in the entrance and waiting areas.

Part of a complete reorganization of the facility, the Orthopedic Program and registration services were brought to the front of the building with a separate entrance.
The addition is positioned adjacent to the building’s main entry, folded into the original structure with matching sand-colored brick and stone accents. This configuration extends the building’s wide radius, providing a pleasant curvature.

Arranged to better greet patients, the entrance doors provide a clear sight line to the registration desk and includes a hospitality bar adjacent to a well-spaced waiting room. The flow allows patients to quickly register and complete any tasks before relaxing ahead of their appointment.
