Project Highlights

Enhance the visitor experience
Add exhibition and event space
Improve the museum’s connection with the outdoors

This expansion of the museum’s main exhibit gallery will transform the experience for visitors.

It will accommodate four tracks of rolling stock and other small exhibits, allowing for better display of the 150,000 artifacts in the museum’s collection.

In addition to the thousands of students they welcome each year to explore STEM subjects, additional educational opportunities will be able to take place in the large new classroom. The museum will also be able to host private events for up to 200 guests, such as weddings, corporate events, and more.
Embracing the museum’s location on the Fox River, a large wall of windows and an oversized terrace will open the museum up to the riverfront and connect it with nature.

The National Railroad Museum anticipates that this expansion will increase attendance by 50% over the next five years. This is phase 1 of a master plan developed by Berners Schober, in association with Stantec, in 2015.
