Integrated Italianate features are reminiscent of the area where the Hospital Sisters’ patrons, St. Francis and St. Clare, provided their healing ministries. A piazza entry with lovely exterior garden views and natural materials and colors enhance the warm, spiritual atmosphere of the healing environment. The new home for the cancer center offers the best in cancer treatment technology and compassionate care, enhanced by beautiful greenery to inspire and help patients heal.
Adopting the Hospital Sisters’ mission to provide quality health care and using natural resources responsibly, the addition was built using LEED and Green Guide for Health Care principles.
Design features were chosen to conserve energy, including low energy-use lighting and Energy Star heating and cooling systems. Water-conserving plumbing fixtures, an extensive use of daylighting, rainwater collection and irrigation help the structure fold into its environment.
A third level provides entry to a large, lush green roof. Benches line 2,400 square feet of paths winding through 22,000 square feet of succulent plants. In addition to providing a peaceful space to view nature, the living roof reduces heat loss and helps reduce noise levels in and around the building.
