Project Summary

PATIENT TOWER REMODELING

St. John’s Hospital embarked on a multi-year phased project to renovate floors 6 through 9 of its patient tower. Adding to the complexity was the need to keep in operation the ground floor and four patient occupied floors below the renovated area, as well as two mechanical floors above the 9th floor. Detailed planning was required to coordinate phasing and utility service continuity.

Key to the renovation of patient rooms was a focus on improving both patient safety and experience. Improvements for safety included updated patient support utilities and convenient layouts. Amenities to enhance patience experience during their stay included improved views to the exterior, orientation toward family gathering area, and convenient proximity to a private bathroom with shower. Each renovated floor has a capacity of 32 beds, clinic space to support patient care, multiple nurse work spaces, and family areas. Arrangement of these functions was designed to minimize staff and support personnel inefficiencies, which allows staff more time to spend on patient care.
