The State of Wisconsin commissioned a new building on its existing site in northern Wisconsin to replace an aging facility. The new 18,000SF building serves as both an office base for employees and a service center for state residents. The headquarters exemplifies the State’s environmental mission by its integration with the site and design to LEED Gold standards.

By exhibiting the agency’s mission for both visitor and employee, the center provides a home for those passionate about nature.
A grand entrance greets the public. Curved wood beams encompass the sun-drenched office space and a water feature in the employee plaza brings nature inside. The design takes advantage of the building’s size with clerestory glazing, freeing open spaces and sculptural interpretive signs. The entire building acts as an educational entity with integration of the Northern Wisconsin landscape.
Stormwater is collected and dispersed through a circuit system. Bioswales, rain gardens and detention basins link together to hold the water that then flows around the building bringing together functionality, nature, ingenuity and aesthetics that define the Department of Natural Resources.
northeast regional headquarters & service center
Nature and outdoor recreation form the backbone of the state of Wisconsin. As the protector of that backbone, the Wisconsin DNR needed an outpost in the northeast region that allowed employees the space to work together and accelerate department initiatives. The 48,400 square foot center and headquarters energetically welcomes visitors and provides a home base for employees.
First LEED building designed for the State of Wisconsin
Service, sustainability and a working relationship with the outdoor environment are primary features of the design. Highlights include a stone and wood exterior, abundant daylighting and grand exterior views of the surrounding grasslands.
